Thuy Trang was a Vietnamese American actress popularly known for portraying Trini Kwan in the television series 'Mighty Morphin Power Rangers'.

Thuy Trang was born in Saigon, now Ho Chi Minh City, in South Vietnam, on December 14, 1973. Her father was a South Vietnamese army soldier forced to leave his homeland.

Her family left South Vietnam when Thuy Trang was two years old. They boarded a cargo ship for Hong Kong with several other victimized Southern Vietnamese people. They resided in the Hong Kong detention camp and eventually reached California in 1980. She completed her higher studies and planned to pursue a career in engineering. But something else happened in between. After a talent scout spotted her, she changed her plans and became an actress.

Thuy Trang was born in Ho Chi Minh City, previously called Saigon, South Vietnam, on December 14, 1973. Her father, Ky Trang, was a South Vietnamese army soldier tasked to protect Saigon from North Vietnamese Army. In 1975, when Saigon declined, her father had to leave his family and flee the country. He immigrated to the United States. He was petitioning the US Government for political asylum for his family. Until then, she, her mother, and her siblings lived in a detention camp. When she was two years old, they fled Saigon to Hong Kong.

In 1979, she and her family boarded a cargo ship for Hong Kong. The journey was challenging for five-year-old Thuy Trang. Due to the limited space, people were tightly packed and did not have enough food or water. During the eight or nine months of the journey, four people died in the cargo. Since she had not eaten anything for an extended period, she fell ill. When unconscious, her mother had to feed her to keep her alive. At one point, the passengers on the ship believed that she was dead. Her mother kept her safe and somehow the family reunited with the father in the United States in 1980.

They settled in Fountain Valley, California. Thuy Trang learned English, began her training in Shaolin Kung Fu and earned a black belt. Unfortunately, Thuy Trang's father died in 1992. She was 18 years old and graduated from Banning High School located in the Wilmington neighborhood of Los Angeles. She planned to follow in her father's and siblings' footsteps and took admission at the University of California, Irvine, to study civil engineering. She shifted her focus from engineering to acting after a talent scout spotted her while hanging out with friends. She enrolled in an introductory action class at UCI in 1992. Even after being a Buddhist, she was selected for a Church of Scientology commercial. Despite undertaking her acting career, Thuy Trang intended to finish her studies after some time.

Thuy Trang was best known for her work in 'Mighty Morphin Power Rangers' as the Yellow Ranger, Trini Kwan. It was also her first major role. Her agent managed to get her into the audition process. The audition process had 500 actresses trying for the role. During the audition, she was put together with Jason David Frank, who was the martial arts instructor and the actor portraying the Green Ranger, Tommy Oliver. In the audition, Thuy Trang had to run into the room screaming, jump onto the table, and perform a karate move. She did as she was told perfectly. The casting director narrowed down 10 actresses, followed by five and then three before Thuy Trang got selected for the role.

After performing in the TV series 'Mighty Morphin Power Rangers', Thuy Trang got her first role in the 1996 film 'Spy Hard'. She played the role of a manicurist. But, she was misinterpreted as playing a masseuse in the movie. Her screen credit was accidentally shuffled with Tara Leon. She also played the role of a leading villain Kali in the 1996 film 'The Crow: City Of Angels'. Her character Kali was a member of the team of Judah Earl. Writer Dougal Macdonald liked her portrayal in the film. However, some reviewers had nothing good to say about her performance.

On January 4, 1995, Thuy Trang and her 'Mighty Morphin Power Rangers' co-star St. John and Jones hosted an information martial arts session at the United States Capitol building. In those sessions, they taught some basic martial arts techniques to New Gingrich and other United States House of Representatives members.

On February 4, 1995, Thuy Trang also appeared as a guest at the Little Saigon Tet Festival, an event organized to honor Vietnamese culture. At the festival, she shared her experience filming Power Rangers and breaking into film and television industry as an Asian American actress.

Thuy Trang loved playing tennis, jogging, and reading novels. She was also interested in constructions and designs as she wanted to pursue a career in civil engineering before becoming an actress.
