Tippi Hedren was born Nathalie Kay Hedren on January 19, 1930, in New Ulm, Minnesota, United States of America. Her parents were Bernard Carl and Dorothea Henrietta Hedren. She has an older sister named Patricia Hedren. Her father ran a general store in Lafayette, Minnesota, before the family moved to Minneapolis. It was there that she began to take part in fashion shows. She attended West High School in Minneapolis before her family shifted to California. Eager to become a professional model, Tippi Hedren bought a ticket to New York City on her 20th birthday and, upon reaching there, joined the Eileen Ford Agency.

Tippi Hedren married Peter Griffith in 1952, and their daughter Melanie Griffith was born in 1957. The two divorced in 1960. Tippi Hedren married her then-agent Noel Marshall in 1964; however, their relationship soured, and the two got a divorce in 1982. She got married again in 1985, this time to steel manufacturer Luis Barrenechea; however, the marriage ended in 1992. She became engaged to Martin Dinnes, a veterinarian, in 2002; but they ended up breaking things off. Tippi Hedren made her on-screen debut in a small role in 'The Petty Girl'. However, she did not pursue a career in acting, instead preferring to focus on modeling. Her dedication paid off, and she was able to build a great career for herself, becoming one of the top models of the '50s and '60s. She made appearances on many magazine covers, including 'Glamour', 'Life', and 'The Saturday Evening Post'.

However, the trajectory of her career changed when she received a call from renowned filmmaker Alfred Hitchcock in October 1961, who had seen her in an advertisement for a diet drink on 'The Today Show'. The director became her drama coach and offered her the leading role in his next film, 'The Birds', which she graciously accepted. She received a lot of praise and admiration for her role, and pleased with her performance, Hitchcock offered her the lead in his psychological thriller and romantic drama film 'Marnie' as well. However, the pair had a tumultuous relationship, and Hedren decided to sever relations with the director and go about her own way.

Her next role was in 'A Countess in Hong Kong' in 1987, and she appeared in many more films after that, including 'Tiger by the Tail', 'Pacific Heights', 'Citizen Ruth', 'Return To Babylon' and 'The Ghost And The Whale'. She has also appeared in guest roles in television shows, like 'Cougar Town', 'Raising Hope', 'CSI: Crime Scene Investigation', 'Chicago Hope' and more.

In fact, she produced 'Roar', an action-comedy movie that focused on spreading awareness for the protection of African wildlife. The film took 11 years to make and resulted in Hedren founding The Roar Foundation and the Shambhala Reserve in California. She was also elected as the first president of the nonprofit organization American Sanctuary Association and remains so to date.

In 2011, the United Nations honored her with the Women Together Award, and she received an honorary master of fine arts degree from the New York Film Academy in 2012. In 2013, she was given the Legacy of Style Award, followed by the Believe, Achieve, Empower Award in 2015, the Icon Award in 2017, and the Friend for Life Award from the Palm Springs Animal Shelter in 2018.
