Alan Autry is also a former National Football League player from the United States. Autry was known as Carlos Brown throughout his brief football career.

On the NBC and subsequently CBS television series 'In the Heat of the Night', Alan Autry played Captain Bubba Skinner. This was a character performed by Carroll O'Connor. Autry appeared in films and on television.

Alan Autry was elected mayor of Fresno, California, in November 2000. Autry served two four-year terms until January 2009. Autry began hosting a radio news discussion program on KYNO AM 940 in Fresno in 2008 but departed the station in 2011.

Carl and Verna Autry raised Alan Autry in Shreveport, Louisiana. After Autry's parents split when he was a year old, he was later renamed, Carlos Brown. He labored in California's San Joaquin Valley with his mother and stepfather, Joe Duty, planting and harvesting cotton, grapes, and other crops while moving around the valley in migrant workers' camps. The family then moved to Riverdale, California, when he was 12. Autry went to Riverdale High school for his education.

Alan Autry was a star quarterback for the Riverdale Cowboys in high school. He was a second-string tight end for the Tigers in his final year after receiving an athletic scholarship to pursue study at the University of the Pacific in Stockton, California. In 1975, he was picked by the Green Bay Packers when he spent three games as the starting quarterback 1976.

Alan Autry's football career ended abruptly when then-coach Bart Starr released him. Autry then moved to Hollywood to pursue a career as an actor. In 1979, he attempted a football return with the B.C. Lions of the CFL (as Carlos Brown). After Joe Paopao and another ex-Green Bay Packer, Jerry Tagge, he was the third-string quarterback.

In 1978, Alan Autry made his film debut in the film 'Remember My Name'. He first met his father, Carl Autry Sr., in 1982, while on set in Shreveport for the film 'Southern Comfort', after seeing Carl's name in the phone book. Following that, he decided to revert to his birth surname of Autry.

Alan Autry founded his production firm, Dirt Road Productions, in 1997. He published 'The Legend of Jake Kincaid', a western based on a story he created, in 2002. He was also the film's director.

Alan Autry, an Independent, was elected mayor of Fresno in 2000 to succeed Jim Patterson, beating previous mayor Dan Whitehurst. On March 2, 2004, he was elected to a second term from 2005-2009 with more than 72 % of the vote. Autry was ineligible to run for re-election due to term restrictions. In November 2008, he backed Ashley Swearengin, who was elected mayor in his place.

Alan Autry and his 'In the Heat of the Night' co-star Randall Franks formed Autry-Franks Productions to create the charity 'In the Heat of the Night' CD 'Christmas Time's A-Comin', which included the show's ensemble. The effort earned funding for anti-drug abuse organizations. In tribute to Gene Autry, Autry sang his rendition of 'Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer' with Franks.

Both 'Jingle Bells' and 'Christmas Time's A-Comin' were sung by the duet. Franks and Autry incorporated numerous music legends, such as Kitty Wells, Jimmy Dickens, and Pee Wee King. Many bluegrass artists, such as Jim & Jesse and The Lewis Family. The 'Christmas Time's A-Comin' CD, issued by Sonlite and MGM/UA, was one of the most successful Christmas releases among Southern shops in 1991 and 1992.

Autry and Randall Franks founded Autry-Franks Productions. 'Alan Autry and Randall Franks Mississippi Moon: Country Traditions', an Americana CD featuring both actors singing several old and original songs, was published in 2013 by Crimson Records. Bluegrass Hall of Fame members Jim and Jesse McReynolds and three-time Dove Award candidate Mark Wheeler make guest cameos on the record, which combines country, bluegrass, and Southern gospel.
