Annu Rani is the first female javelin thrower from India to qualify for the World Championships final in 2019.
Her career as a javelin thrower started in the sugarcane fields in Bahadurpur village in Uttar Pradesh. Her brother, Upendra Singh, discovered her talents and fostered them.
Annu had a hard time convincing her conservative father to allow her to venture into sports. Coach Kashinath Naik understood Annu's potential to become an international javelin thrower. He convinced her father and started training her in 2013. Annu Rani trained rigorously at the National Institute of Sports, Patiala.
Under the coaching of Naik, she was able to set an Indian national record of 193 ft (58.83 m) in the 2014 National Inter-States Athletics Championship. Annu won a bronze medal in the Asian Games held in South Korea in the same year. She is currently one of the best woman javelin throwers from India.

Annu won a bronze medal at the Asian Athletics Championships 2017 with a throw of 188 ft (57.32 m). At Qatar's 23rd Asian Athletics Championship on April 21, 2019, Annu Rani won the silver medal with a throw of 197.5 ft (60.22 m), adding another feather to her cap. Later that year, Annu acquired a gold medal at the 59th National Open Athletics Championship.
Annu Rani continued to make many more achievements. At the IAAF World Athletics Championship of 2019, Annu broke her national record of 204.5 ft (62.34 m) with a javelin throw of 204.8 ft (62.43 m). At the Golden Spike Ostrava Athletics meet, Annu bagged a bronze medal. Later, Annu Rani qualified for the Tokyo Olympics 2020 based on the world ranking and became the second woman from India to qualify for the Olympics in the javelin throw. In 2021, Annu Rani performed her career-best with a throw of 207.4 ft (63.24 m) in the National Interstate Athletics Championship in Patiala and won the gold medal.
Annu won the Sportswoman of the Year Award in Athletics at the 2020 Sportstar ACES awards.
