The match was declared No Contest as both participants sustained severe head injuries inside the boxing ring and were immediately hospitalized.
Following this event, Daniel Santos renounced his 'Welterweight' World title to compete in the Light Middleweight division. As a result, on March 16, 2002, Margarito fought Antonio Diaz at Bally's Las Vegas, Paradise, Nevada, for the vacant 'WBO' title. Margarito defeated his opponent and became the 'World Champion' for the first time.
On February 8, 2003, Margarito competed in a 'WBO' title game against Andrew Lewis at Mandalay Bay Events Center, Nevada. Despite being a strong opponent and a hard puncher, Lewis could not defeat Margarito. Margarito retained his 'WBO' belt and made a career record of 28-3.
Margarito again retained his 'WBO' Championship title on April 23, 2005, at Caesar's Palace, Paradise, Nevada. This time his opponent was the famous Puerto Rican boxer Kermit Cintrón.
Margarito faced Cintrón again on April 12, 2008, at Boardwalk Hall, Atlantic City, New Jersey. It was an 'IBF' title match, ending with Margarito becoming the 'IBF Welterweight Champion' for the first time in his career.
On July 26, 2008, the tremendous Mexican-American boxer defeated Miguel Cotto at MGM Grand Garden Arena, Paradise, Nevada, to win the 'WBA Welterweight' title for the first time. Margarito met Miguel Cotto again in a WBA (Super) Light Middleweight championship match on December 3, 2011. However, this time, Cotto emerged victorious.
Before this defeat, Margarito had also competed against Manny Pacquiao for the 'WBC Light Middleweight' title on November 13, 2010, at Cowboys Stadium, Arlington, Texas. During the fight, Margarito suffered career-changing eye damage and lost the match.
The matches against Cotto and Pacquiao marked, for the first time, two consecutive defeats in Margarito's entire boxing career.
Among his most significant achievements are the three different welterweight titles he won in his professional career: the WBA (Super), the IBF, and the WBO.
The first and the second one Margarito won in 2008. The last one he won in 2002 and retained it till 2007.
