He started overseeing the entire research sector in 1993. He rose to become the company's Chief Executive Officer in 1995, followed by being made the chairman four years later, in 1999.
The Princeton University grad is also recognized as an inventor of 11 different patents. His excellent technical and managerial profile resulted in him being chosen to replace Steve Jobs as the chairman of the board of directors of Apple Inc. in 2011. Two years later, he became the Chief Executive Officer of Calico, which was a relatively new company in the market, aiming to enter the healthcare industry. The company's parent organization was Google and it was funded by the IT giant.
Levinson has also served as the chairman of the board of directors of Amyris. Inc. He was also appointed as a member of the board of directors of the Broad Institute at MIT and Harvard. The Apple Inc. chairman also holds a position in the California Institute for Quantitative Biomedical Research as a member of their advisory committee. He is also an advisor to the Department of Molecular Biology at Princeton University. He was appointed as a member of the advisory board at the Lewis-Sigler Institute for Integrative Genomics. He is also a position-holder at the Innovation Advisory Board of the United States Commerce Department. He has also been named a fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences.
Levinson is also a member of the Board of Scientific Consultants for the Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center. He is also a board member of the company, NGM Pharmaceuticals. The Apple Inc. chairman continues to be heavily involved with the Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory in his capacity as a research scientist, focusing on cancer research.

He was honored by the Chemical Heritage Foundation and the Biotechnology Industry Organization, when they jointly presented him with the Biotechnology Heritage Award. He was also honored by his alma mater with the Alumnus Summa Laude Dignatus Award, which is the highest recognition given to any University of Washington graduate. He has also received the National Medal of Technology and Innovation. The National Medal is the highest honor given to an American citizen for their contribution to the advancement of science and technology.
He has also been honored with the Distinguished Alumnus Award by the University of California for his contribution to the field of technology. He was also honored by the Franklin Institute when they presented him with the Bower Award for Business Leadership in 2020. He has been named as one of the 25 best CEOs by Louis Carter, the famous businessman. Princeton University has also awarded him the James Madison Medal for his contribution to the field of science. The Irvington Institute has also honored Levinson with corporate leadership awards.
