Athina Onassis is the last surviving descendant of Aristotle Onassis.
Born in France, to Christina Onassis and Thierry Roussel in 1985, Athina Onassis was once nicknamed the richest little girl in the world. Her net worth was reportedly around $5 billion when she inherited half of her grandfather's legacy.
The remaining amount was managed by a foundation in the name of Alexander Onassis. Athina Onassis has developed her career as an equestrian athlete and show jumper. She has participated in many international competitions, representing both France and Greece.
As of 2022, Athina Onassis is believed to be worth just under $1 billion.
It is not known how much Athina Onassis earns per year.
Athina Onassis is 5 ft 6 in (168 cm) tall.
Athina Onassis was born on January 29, 1985, so she turned 37 years old in January 2022.
Athina Roussel was born in Neuilly-sur-Seine, France, on January 29, 1985. She is the daughter of Christina Onassis and Thierry Roussel. While Christina Onassis was the heir of her father's shipping company, Thierry Roussel came from a French pharmaceutical family.
Athina Onassis Roussel was less than a year old when her mother started divorce proceedings. She stayed with her mother for the first three years of her life.
Christina Onassis died when Athina was just three years old, so she was sent to live with her father. She was raised along with her step siblings, Erik Christopher Roussel, Sandrine Roussel and Johanna Roussel. Erik Christopher Roussel was merely six months younger than Athina Onassis Roussel, as Thierry Roussel had been having an affair during the marriage to her mother.
Athina Onassis was enrolled in a school in Lussy-sur-Morges, Switzerland, and earned her baccalaureate in 2003, after a course in Belgium.
As of 2022, Athina Onassis is single.
She was previously married to Álvaro de Miranda Neto, from 2005 to 2016. Neto is 12 years older than Athina and a fellow show jumper. After the wedding, Athina Onassis Roussel dropped her father's last name and was known as Athina Onassis. While her father and step mother did not attend the wedding, her step siblings, including Johanna Roussel, attended the wedding.
Unfortunately, the marriage ended in a complicated divorce. The couple did not have any children together but Athina helped bring up two of Neto's children from previous relationships.
Apart from her career as an equestrian show jumper, Athina Onassis is known as the last descendent and sole heiress of the fortune earned by Aristotle Onassis. Her mother inherited 55% of the fortune with the remaining 45% going to the Alexander S. Onassis Foundation, named after Athina's late uncle, Alexander Onassis. Athina's net worth rose when she inherited her mother's fortune at the age of 18 years.
Athina Onassis Roussel developed a love for animals when she was living with her father. She started participating in equestrian competitions when she was a child. In 2001, Athina Onassis Roussel finished in second place for an event in Spain.
When Athina Onassis Roussel turned 17 years old, she joined an equestrian school in Fleurus, Belgium called Haras de Ligny. It was there that the heiress met Álvaro de Miranda Neto. The two started dating and Athina moved to Sao Paulo and bought a $8.6 million property without making too big a dent in her net worth.
Athina's father did not approve of this relationship and it worsened the rift between the two of them. After this, Athina Onassis Roussel started legal proceedings to take control of her fortune back from her father, Thierry Roussel.
Around the same time, she joined an equestrian club called Avlona. Athina Onassis Roussel started participating in racing and show jumping championships in Europe.
In 2006, she started taking part in the Global Champions tour. A year later, in 2007, she founded the Athina Onassis International Horse Show with her husband. In 2009, the competition moved to Rio de Janeiro and later in 2014, it moved again to Saint-Tropez, France.
In 2012, Athina Onassis had a bad fall from her horse resulting in two broken vertebrae. The injury kept her form competing for many months. She returned to the field in December 2014, for the Credit Suisse Grand Prix event in Geneva, but this time, her horse crashed into an obstacle and was injured to the point of having to be put down.
A heartbroken Athina Onassis took a break from competing after this accident. She was seen a few years later in the Netherlands for a leg of the Global Champions tour.
As the last descendent of the Onassis family, Athina Onassis is fighting to chair the Onassis foundation. However, because of a statement made by her as a child and her lack of knowledge about Greece, its language, and Greek culture, she has been unsuccessful in achieving her aim.
The foundation has control over half the Onassis fortune and uses it for charitable work.
At her wedding to Álvaro de Miranda Neto, the couple asked for charity donations rather than gifts.
Athina Onassis ranked 14th at the 2013 Herning Continental/Regional Championship in Denmark.
