He had two sisters who are nine and 13 years elder to him. Barry's family wanted him to focus on his career in baseball. Hence, they decided to shift to San Diego, California. His father, who had no prior knowledge of baseball, began reading pitching technique books and even took time off work to assist his son in coaching. Randy Jones, a former winner of the Cy Young Award, was hired by his father to teach him baseball for $50 an hour when he was 12 years old.

For his senior year, he switched from Grossmont High Institution in El Cajon, where he was the standout pitcher, to the University of San Diego High School, a Roman Catholic private school. There, Zito went 8-4 with a 2.92 ERA and 105 strikeouts in just 85 innings, earning him many league honors. He pitched for the Oakland Athletics and the San Francisco Giants in Major League Baseball (MLB) for 15 years.

Before having celebrity status, while pitching at USC, he was named to the first-team All-American. The Oakland Athletics' Barry Zito is a member of the UC Santa Barbara baseball team. Zito attended the University of California, Santa Barbara, the University of San Diego Pierce College in Los Angeles, and the University of Southern California. Roberta Zito, Zito's mother, was a singer who performed with Nat King Cole and his band and in a choral group called The Merry Young Souls. Zito is a musician as well. He plays guitar and co-wrote 'Butterflies', which was included in Eddie Murphy's film 'A Thousand Words'. Patrick Duffy, a television actor who was married to Zito's maternal aunt, is Zito's uncle.
