Randy Jones, a former winner of the Cy Young Award, was hired by his father to teach him baseball for $50 an hour when he was 12 years old.

For his senior year, he switched from Grossmont High Institution in El Cajon, where he was the standout pitcher, to the University of San Diego High School, a Roman Catholic private school. There, Zito went 8-4 with a 2.92 ERA and 105 strikeouts in just 85 innings, earning him many league honors. He pitched for the Oakland Athletics and the San Francisco Giants in Major League Baseball (MLB) for 15 years.
