Oates graduated from Albany High School in Georgia and attended Brigham Young University (BYU). Before serving a two-year mission for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Las Vegas, Nevada, he played college football for two years and later joined the Cougars football team. Oates graduated from BYU's Marriott School of Business with a bachelor's degree in accounting in 1985, and in 1992, he became a part of the BYU Athletic Hall of Fame.

Bart Oates is best known for being a Football player.

Oates was signed by the Giants in 1985 when he was 26 years old. This was due to his three seasons in the USFL with the Philadelphia/Baltimore Stars, where he won two USFL championships. According to Oates, the 1985 Philadelphia Stars of the USA Football League (USFL) could have defeated the 1985 Philadelphia Eagles. Oates earned three Super Bowls. With the Giants, he won two in 1987 and 1991, and with the 49ers, he won one in 1995. Oates has been named five Pro Bowls and the UPI All-NFC team three times during his career. During his Giants career, he started a total of 125 consecutive games.

Oates is the president of the NFL Alumni Association, which has two main goals: to look after our own and to look after children. During the off-season of football, he took law school classes and graduated Magna and Laude from Seton Hall Law School in 1990 with a Juris Doctor degree. He worked for the law firms of Ribis Graham and Curtin in Morristown, Raymond Koski and Associates in Fort Lee, and the Florham Park-based real estate business Gale and Wentworth.

His main areas of expertise were real estate and health care. He belongs to the New Jersey State Bar Association as well.  He was the chairman of the New Jersey Hall of Fame, which honors New Jersey residents in many areas, from scientists to athletics. He was inducted into the 2019 New Jersey Hall of Fame Class. Oates appeared in the Aqua Teen Hunger Force episode 'Bart Oates' in 2006. Earlier in the decade, he also volunteered as a line coach at Seton Hall Preparatory School. He is the Bishop (lay Pastor) of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints' Morristown, NJ, first Ward.
