Betty Boo was born Alison Clarkson, on March 6, 1970, in Kensington, London.
She is a popular pop singer and songwriter from the UK, who started her musical career as a youngster. The singer's stage name was once Betty Boop, after Max Fleischer's iconic cartoon character, but it was changed to Betty Boo due to legal concerns about using the name.
Betty Boo was a member of the female rap trio, The She-Rockers, as well as the duo, Hit 'N' Run. Betty Boo's big break was when she appeared as a guest vocalist on the Beatmaster's single, 'Hey DJ/I Can't Dance (To That Music You're Playing)'. The song ranked number seven on the UK music charts. With the money she made off this release, Betty Boo acquired the instruments she needed to record her next big hit, 'Doin' The Do!'.
Betty Boo's net worth is roughly $1 million.
Betty Boo's exact annual income is unknown.
Betty Boo is 5 ft 10 in (178 cm) tall.
Alison Moira Clarkson was born on March 6, 1970, so she celebrated her 42nd birthday in March 2022, and her zodiac sign is Pisces.
Alison Moira Clarkson was born in Kensington, West London, to a Scottish mother and a Malaysian father. Having a multicultural family background and growing up in '80s London, Clarkson was exposed to all kinds of cultures and aesthetics. She would sit in her bedroom with her friends and rap along to the radio. The family's move from Kensington to colorful Shepherd's Bush also impacted her teenage years.
Clarkson studied sound engineering at the Holloway School of Audio Engineering, even though her parents were averse to the career path she was taking. Her father passed away just before she was supposed to start her A-levels, so her education became the least of her priorities.
At the age of 17, Clarkson left England and ran away to the US for two months, which did not please her mother. She then formed the band She Rockers, with her friends Donna McConnell and Dupe Fagbesa.
Betty Boo is currently married to film producer Paul Toogood. The pair live together in Wiltshire, England, as of 2022.
After being noticed by the American hip-hop group, Public Enemy, the She Rockers flew out to New York and worked with the group. During this time, Betty Boo was encouraged to pursue a solo career.
Then, Betty Boo appeared in The Beatmasters' 'Hey DJ!/I Can't Dance (To That Music You're Playing). Her rap verse in the song got the attention of Rhythm King records and they signed her. Betty Boo bought herself a keyboard, a sampler, and a four-track tape machine and began to pen songs in her bedroom. One of the songs she produced shortly after this was 'Doin' The Do'.
The song took off slowly at first, but after radio pluggers, Ferret N Spanner, got involved, 'Doin' The Do' was a hit. The solo single, paired with Betty Boo's unique glam-rock image, took the English singer to number seven on the UK charts. Betty Boo was also the first British female rapper to have a top 10 hit. The song featured as the title tune for the Bitmap Brothers' video game, 'Magic Pockets'.
The single that followed, 'Where Are You Baby', did even better and reached number three. The several songs that followed after her first few hits had fluctuating success, and at the age of 25, the singer went on a long hiatus. Betty Boo's song, 'Why, Oh Why', is featured in the American film, 'A Rage In Harlem' (1991).
The singer has made a comeback at the age of 52, with her newest album, 'Boomerang', due to be released on October 14, 2022.
In 2019, Betty Boo was one of the many talented singers that performed at The Love Unlimited Synth Orchestra in Glastonbury, England. The event was a tribute to legendary soul singer, Barry White, and was performed by Paraorchestra, an orchestra that displays the talent of professional disabled and non-disabled musicians. A registered charity, the orchestra is funded by similar events and also funded by The Mark Leonard Trust and Arts Council England. Rachel Chinouriri, Kele Okereke, Shingai, and Eno Williams were a few other guests that performed at the event.
Betty Boo was voted the Best British Breakthrough Act at the BRIT Awards in 1991. She received the award for her solo singles in the previous years, which were received well, despite being mostly self-produced.
Betty Boo also received the NME Award for Most Desirable Person in 1990.
Betty Boo prides herself on her cooking skills. Her Instagram page features several delicious dishes she has made for different occasions. These include her '70s trifle for Christmas 2019, crispy fried chicken and jacket potatoes, and glazed ham. She often uses homemade ingredients as well.
Betty Boo has a Burmese cat called Barry and another cat called Bilbo, that she also posts about often.
