By profession, Bharrat Jagdeo is an economist, and in 1990, he started his public service in Guyana's State Planning Secretariat. In 1992, when democracy was revived in Guyana, the now Vice President Jagdeo started his tenure as Junior Minister of Finance. Soon Bharrat Jagdeo got promoted to the senior minister of finance.

Bharrat Jagdeo is best known as the vice president of Guyana, who served since 2020 under the administration of President Irfaan Ali. The Guyanese politician had previously held the post from 1997 to 1999 under the administration of Janet Jagan.

During the presidency of Janet Jagan, Janet had announced her resignation from the post of president due to health reasons and that Bharrat Jagdeo would preside as her successor. In legal terms, as the prime minister is the president's successor, Bharrat Jagdeo took over as prime minister on August 9 as Janet Jagan's successor.

Bharrat Jagdeo was the first president of Guyana who relinquished his office according to the term limits defined by the Guyanese constitution. In 2015 after PPP/C's electoral defeat, Bharrat Jagdeo became the opposition leader in National Assembly. After becoming the national assembly opposition leader, he was sworn as the vice president under the presidency of Irfaan Ali. This was when PPP/C returned to power again in 2020.

From August 1999 to December 2011, Bharrat Jagdeo held many global leadership posts in sustainable development areas such as climate change and green growth. Before this position, Bharrat was the minister of finance and the president post Janet Jagan's resignation. He then won the two elections of 2001 and 2006.
