After that, Bill went to Princeton University, where he majored in health care policy and received his degree in 1974. After finishing his internship, Frist started a cardiovascular transplantation program at Vanderbilt University Medical Center. He joined the Nashville Veterans Administration Hospital's team as a surgeon and established the Vanderbilt Transplant Center in 1989.

Bill started his career when he shared his interest in running for public office with ex-Senate Majority Leader Howard Baker in 1990. In the 1994 Republican takeover of chambers of Congress, he won the race by 13 points over Sasser and became the Senate's first physician since Royal S. Copeland's death in 1938.
After working as a cardiac surgeon, Bill Frist was elected in 1994 to serve in the US Senate. In 1928, he was elected as the first professional physician to have a position in that legislature.
He continued his yearly medical visits to underdeveloped nations while serving in the Senate. In 1994, during his first Senate campaign, his care of cats drew criticism when the opposition party in the Republican primary referred to him as a cat-killer.
