Bill Frist is the son of Thomas F. Frist, Sr., and Dorothy Cate. He has four siblings: Thomas F. Frist, Jr., Robert A. Frist, Dorothy F. Boensch, and Mary F. Barfield. He started his education at Montgomery Bell Academy.
After that, Bill went to Princeton University, where he majored in health care policy and received his degree in 1974. While attending Princeton University, he belonged to the University Cottage Club. He continued to Harvard Medical School, where he graduated in 1978 with distinctions and a doctor of medicine degree.
While a medical school student in the '70s, Frist conducted lethal medical tests and vivisections on cats. Between 1997-2006, he was awarded honors from five historically black colleges and universities, notably Fisk University, Howard University, LeMoyne-Owen College, Meharry Medical College, and the Morehouse School of Medicine.
After finishing his internship, Frist started a cardiovascular transplantation program at Vanderbilt University Medical Center. He joined the Nashville Veterans Administration Hospital's team as a surgeon and established the Vanderbilt Transplant Center in 1989.

He wed Karyn Frist in 1981, and they separated in 2012. They have three children: Bryan, Jonathan, and Harrison.

Bill started his career when he shared his interest in running for public office with ex-Senate Majority Leader Howard Baker in 1990. In the 1994 Republican takeover of chambers of Congress, he won the race by 13 points over Sasser and became the Senate's first physician since Royal S. Copeland's death in 1938.
After working as a cardiac surgeon, Bill Frist was elected in 1994 to serve in the US Senate. In 1928, he was elected as the first professional physician to have a position in that legislature.
He continued his yearly medical visits to underdeveloped nations while serving in the Senate. In 1994, during his first Senate campaign, his care of cats drew criticism when the opposition party in the Republican primary referred to him as a cat-killer.
In 2000, Senator Frist was elected to lead the National Republican Senatorial Committee. In 2002, Bill was chosen to lead the Senate, making him the third-youngest Senate Majority Leader in American history.
After his retirement, he collaborated with then-Senate Majority Leader Tom Daschle to co-found ONE VOTE '08, a project of the ONE campaign (D-SD).
As a majority leader, Frist advocated for charity, global health, and education reform.
He also partnered with Chicago-based Cressey & Co. and invested in the country's healthcare sector.
Frist earned the Golden Plate Award of the American Academy of Achievement (2001) and the Al Ueltschi Award for Humanitarian Leadership (2011) in honor of his efforts to save people's lives and the vital role commercial aviation played in the initiatives.
Frist loves writing. He authored several books and starred in 'Honoring A Father's Dream: Sons Of Lwala' (2011).
