Bill Russell, born on February 12, 1934, in Monroe, Louisiana, was an American basketball player and one of the greatest NBA players.
In his 13 seasons as a player with the Celtics, he won 11 NBA championships. He also became the first African American coach of a major professional sports team in the United States when he was named Celtics coach in 1966 after Auerbach retired after the 1965-1966 NBA title.
It was an unlikely moment for Bill Russell to become a superstar. He was skinny and shy when he entered the National Basketball Association (NBA) for the Boston Celtics, where he played for the rest of his career. He was the tallest man most had ever seen, 6 ft 10 in tall. As a basketball star, he was not so good at scoring points but at stopping opponents cold in their tracks. He was so good a player that he was regarded as professional by many when he was still playing in his rookie year.
Bill Russels' net worth is $10 million.
The annual salary of Russell in 1965 was $100,001 ($600k after inflation). Also, as a player-coach, he received a bonus of $25,000.
Bill Russell is 6 ft 10 in (208 cm) tall.
Bill Russell's age is 88 (in 2022), and he was born on February 12, 1934.
Russell is a native of Monroe, Louisiana, and the son of Charles and Katie Russell. Russell's mother, Katie, passed away when he was just 12 years old. He has a brother named Charlie L. Russell.
Bill Russel, who graduated from McClymonds High School, California, also studied at the University of San Francisco on scholarship.
Russell married his college sweetheart, Rose Swisher, in 1956. However, the couple divorced in 1973. In 1977, he married Dorothy Anstett, but they divorced in 1980.
In 1996, Russell wed Marilyn Nault. Their marriage lasted until her death in January 2009. According to sources, in 2019, Russell married Jeannine Russell.
Russell dominated on defense. In addition to his height of 6 ft 10 in (2.08 m), he has an arm span of 7 ft 4 in (2.24 m). His shot-blocking and man-to-man defense were major contributors to the Celtics' dominance in the NBA during his career. He had a dozen consecutive seasons of 1,000 or more rebounds, and he led the NBA in rebounds four times. Russell never averaged more than 19.0 points per game, but he is widely considered one of the finest players. He was the first black head coach of a major U.S. professional sports team while coaching the Celtics.
Hunt Auctions listed 429 items for sale on December 10, 2021. Two charities received proceeds from Russell's items, which totaled $7.4 million: the non-profit organization Mentor, which Russell co-founded to strengthen mentoring relationships, and Boston Celtics United for Social Justice, which combats racial injustice and social inequity in the Greater Boston area.
North American sports history has been dominated by athletes such as Russell. Among his awards and achievements are eleven NBA titles in thirteen seasons, including two as a player-coach. Russell became the first player in basketball history to win an NCAA championship and an NBA championship back-to-back after winning the 1956 NCAA championship with USF and the 1957 NBA championship with the New York Knicks. Russel won a gold medal at the 1956 Summer Olympics. Additionally, he won two state championships in high school.
Russell hosted, during season five, episode three of 'Saturday Night Live', and Chicago was the musical guest. He is known for his roles in 'Blood Chase', 'Biloxi Blues' and 'Red Headed Stranger'.
