His acting career began with television shows in the '70s, but he came to fame in the late '80s and '90s thanks to a string of well-received film roles. William Edward Crystal was born in Doctors Hospital on Manhattan's Upper East Side on March 14, 1948, and grew up in the Bronx. When he was just a baby, his family relocated to 549 East Park Avenue in Long Beach, New York, on Long Island.
Crystal is Jewish (his family immigrated from Austria, Russia, and Lithuania), and he grew up going to Temple Emanu-El in Long Beach, New York, where he had his bar mitzvah. Crystal has two brothers Joel (who later became an art teacher) and Richard. His parents are Helen and Jack Crystal.
After getting his graduation from Long Beach High School in 1965, Crystal obtained a baseball scholarship to Marshall University in Huntington, West Virginia. His father gave him training. Crystal never played baseball at Marshall University due to the suspension of the program in the first year of college. He did not come back to Marshall University again. He stayed in New York to be near his future bride.
Crystal went to Nassau Community College with her before transferring to New York University, where he majored in film and television directing. In 1970, he received a BFA from New York University's School of Fine Arts.
