Prior to beginning his professional wrestling career, he was a Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association professional bull rider. The Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association is a professional rodeo sports organization. It was founded in 1936 and has over 4000 members today. Billy Gunn retired from bull riding in his early 20s.

Billy Gunn has made quite a name for himself in the professional wrestling world. He is best known for his time with The New Age Outlaws, a tag team he formed with Road Dogg Jesse James in 1997. Billy Gunn and Road Dogg were both members of D-Generation X (DX) at various times throughout their careers as well as part of The Corporation lineup from 1998-1999. Gunn lost against The Radicalz at Survivor Series with his team of Road Dogg, Chyna, and K-Kwik.
Gunn made his professional wrestling debut in 1993 for the World Wrestling Federation (WWF, now WWE). He competed in the company until 2004. During that time, he won 13 WWF WWE Tag Team Championships with various partners.
He had three tag team partners in total. With Bart Gunn, the pair appeared as 'The Smoking Gunns.' He partnered with Brian Girard James, better known as Road Dogg, as 'The New Age Outlaws.' He also formed a tag team with Italian-American wrestler Chuck Palumbo to form 'Billy and Chuck.' He'd also briefly teamed with Jeff Jarrett. Gunn was released from his WWE contract on November 1, 2004.
He rejoined again in 2012 but was released again after three years for failing a drug test for performance-enhancing substances. He'd tested positive for high testosterone levels at a powerlifting event and was banned from powerlifting for four years.
He also holds the Champion Intercontinental title and is a two-time Hardcore Champion. Billy Gunn has also made numerous appearances for Total Nonstop Action Wrestling (TNA) since 2005 and wrestled at various independent promotions throughout his career.
