When Bruton Smith was 18 years old, he promoted his first stock car race in Midland, Texas, USA. In 1950, Bruton Smith established a partnership with Curtis Turner: American stock car racer, to create Charlotte Motor Speedway. On June 19, 1960, the first World 600 NASCAR race was conducted at Charlotte Motor Speedway. However, the speedway went bankrupt in 1961 and consequently, it went into court receivership.
With this, Bruton Smith returned to the world of auto sales. Soon, he started buying shares in the Charlotte Motor Speedway and by 1975, he bought 80% of the speedway's shares. Further, in 1990, Bruton Smith bought the Atlanta Motor Speedway. After that, he founded Speedway Motorsports in 1994 which owns and manages eight NASCAR tracks. Speedway Motors also owns the Bristol Motor Speedway in Bristol, USA and the Texas Motor Speedway.
Moreover, on January 1, 1997, Bruton Smith founded Sonic Automotive. The successful businessman and race track owner was inducted in the International Motorsports Hall Of Fame in 2007 and then later also NASCAR Hall Of Fame in 2016.
