Butch is one of the successful footballers from Oklahoma. Davis started his career by playing high school football, where he was popular for being an all-state fullback as well as a defensive end.

Butch Davis went on to play college football at the University of Arkansas for a year before a knee injury pushed him to retire. Following graduation, Butch began his coaching career, working as a coach for schools such as Will Rogers, Charles Page, Pawhuska, and Fayetteville before becoming the University of Miami's defensive line coach.

Until 2011, when he was fired because of certain NCAA infractions, Butch Davis was the head football coach of the University of North Carolina team players. Davis, in fact, began coaching at Fayetteville High School in Arkansas at the young age of 22! Having grown up in Tahlequah, Oklahoma, Davis was born in 1951 to Paul and Pat Davis. He began to attend high school at Bixby High School in Bixby, Oklahoma, where he excelled at fullback and defensive end for the Spartans' football team in 1970.

After completing graduation, Butch Davis began to join the University of Arkansas and played under the defensive end for the Razorbacks.

Because of a knee injury, Butch Davis had to discontinue his college career after becoming a student assistant after his freshman year. In the years following his college graduation, he held assistant coaching positions at several high schools, including in Fayetteville in 1973, Pawhuska High School from 1974 to 1975, then Charles Page High School in Sand Springs, Oklahoma from 1976 to 1977. In 1978, he served as the head coach at Will Rogers High School for the first time.
