Butch Davis went on to play college football at the University of Arkansas for a year before a knee injury pushed him to retire. Following graduation, Butch began his coaching career, working as a coach for schools such as Will Rogers, Charles Page, Pawhuska, and Fayetteville before becoming the University of Miami's defensive line coach.

Having grown up in Tahlequah, Oklahoma, Davis was born in 1951 to Paul and Pat Davis. He began to attend high school at Bixby High School in Bixby, Oklahoma, where he excelled at fullback and defensive end for the Spartans' football team in 1970.
After completing graduation, Butch Davis began to join the University of Arkansas and played under the defensive end for the Razorbacks.
