She was on a contract-based role of acting in 210 episodes of the drama series. A year and a half in, she decided to leave the role to play a part in the Broadway play 'Tribute'.
After the show ended, she moved to California. Here she worked on the sitcom 'The Bad News Bears' and then in 'Love For Rent'.
In 1980 her career took a positive turn when she auditioned to play the part of Marilyn Monroe in the screen adaptation of Norman Mailer's best-selling book, 'Marilyn: The Untold Story'. Hicks was nominated for an Emmy Award for her outstanding performance in the biopic.
The following year, she was cast in 'Valley Of The Dolls', the film adaptation of Jacqueline Susann's book. In 1986 Catherine was cast in 'Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home' as Dr. Gillian Taylor.
