She graduated in music theory from Berklee College of Music in Boston, Massachusetts. She also earned an outdoor recreation certificate as well as a black belt in Choi Kwang-Do martial arts. Catriona Gray's pageant career began in 1999 when she was five years old and won Little Miss Philippines in Sydney.

Gray was named Miss World Philippines on October 2, 2016, and she received a variety of special awards as well as business endorsement awards. At the Miss World Philippines 2017 pageant hosted at the Mall of Asia Arena in Pasay City, Philippines on September 3, 2017, Gray announced Laura Lehmann as her successor.

Gray competed in Miss World 2016 at MGM National Harbor in Oxon Hill, Maryland, where she placed in the top five and won a variety of honors after winning the title of Miss World Philippines in the national competition.

Catriona Gray formally applied to Binibining Pilipinas to compete in the 2018 national pageant on January 8, 2018. Gray's participation in the Binibining Pilipinas 2018 pageant was confirmed by Stella Araneta, Binibining Pilipinas country director. Gray won the national costume award for wearing a Muslim princess outfit from Mindanao in the national costume competition.
