The British poet, Cecil Day Lewis, was a leading Irish-British poet in the '30s.
Mr. Lewis was not only a poet, he was also a renowned novelist and essayist. This famous Irish-born poet was appointed Poet Laureate in 1968.
Cecil Day Lewis was born on April 27, 1904, in Ballintubbert, Ireland. He was the only son of the church minister of Ireland at the time. Mr. Lewis's mother died when he was only two years old. He joined Oxford, where he studied classics, after finishing his intermediate schooling and he decided to pursue his career as a poet. The poet struggled to make ends meet as a young boy and often had to take up other jobs to fulfill his dream of a career in literature. He was greatly inspired by revolutionary ideas and joined the communist party of Great Britain for a few years.
By the 1930s, he earned success as a poet. Apart from poetry, Cecil Day Lewis also wrote mystery novels and detective novels. Lewis reached the peak of his career by the '50s and ultimately became the Poet Laureate in 1968. In the later years of his life, Mr. Lewis served as a lecturer at Cambridge University and was selected as chairman of the Arts Council Literature Panel. Born on April 27, 1904, Cecil Day Lewis was the only child of Kathleen Blake and Frank Day Lewis. He spent his childhood in the Irish town of Ballintubbert of Queen's County, which is currently called County Laos. Cecil lost his mother when he was only two years old and moved to England with his family. Unfortunately, Cecil faced a difficult relationship with his father and was mainly raised by his aunt Agnes. After pre-schooling in London, Cecil Day Lewis chose to move to Sherborne School to move away from his father. He was studying there on a scholarship. He showed an excellent ability to compose wonderful poems from a young age and was admitted to Wadham College, Oxford to pursue poetry. In his final year of Oxford, he edited the collection of 'Oxford Poetry' with his fellow student W.H. Auden and this marked the start of his career.

In the '20s Cecil Day Lewis became acquainted with the British American poet, W. H. Auden. Along with Auden, he published his first poetry collection, 'Beechen Vigil', and became the co-editor of 'Oxford Poetry' in 1927. Influenced by the leftist political views of his acquainted poets, he joined the Communist Party of Great Britain in 1935 amidst socio-political turmoil in his country. He worked as a teacher in at least three schools during the period of crisis in the '30s including Larchfield school. Cecil Day Lewis decided to write mystery stories to diversify his income sources and came up with his first detective novel in 1935, titled 'A Question Of Proof'. Following the success of the story, he wrote several other crime novels in the series with the pen-name Nicholas Blake.
Day Lewis was appointed as a publications editor in the Ministry of Information when the Second World War started. The Irish poet became a professor of poetry at Oxford in 1951. He was also hired as the Charles Eliot Norton professor of poetry at Harvard University in the '60s.
He became a Poet Laureate in 1968. Cecil was selected as the vice-president of the Royal Society of Literature and the chairman of the Arts Council Literature Panel. He was also a member of the Irish Academy of Letters.
