Charles is the co-founder and chairman of EchoStar and Dish Network. The Dish Network CEO stepped down in favor of Joseph Clayton in May 2011.

Following Clayton's retirement in March 2015, Ergen resumed his role as CEO. He remained in that position until December 2017, when he promoted Erik Carlson to CEO and retained his role as chairman. On March 1, 1953, Ergen was born in Oak Ridge, Tennessee, to Viola and William Krasny Ergen. He was the fourth of the five children his parents had together. One of his mother's accomplishments was being Minnesota's first female accountant.

During the ’30s, his father worked as a nuclear physicist in Sweden and left Europe just before World War II. As a result, China Syndrome is a term that his father coined.

Ergen graduated with a Master of Business Administration in 1976 from Wake Forest before becoming a financial analyst at Frito-Lay. In 1978, he retired to work independently. In the following years, he became a career gambler. The businessman used to blackjack and play poker.

When putting in $60,000 to acquire a couple of C-Band antennas, Ergen, Canty McAdam, and Jim DeFranco founded EchoSphere Corporation in 1980.

He was instrumental in making satellite receivers available for under $200. An injunction was sought to halt the service but was denied. Dish filed a lawsuit asserting the legality of the judgment.
