Charles Rangel was employed by Weaver, Evan & Wingate, a prominent black legal service provider in America. After graduating from law school and passing the bar association test, however, he is most notably remembered for his tenure as a representative for Congress. He made minimal income as an independent lawyer but developed a solid record for advocating black civil rights.

Attorney General Robert F. Kennedy gave Charles Rangel the position of assistant attorney in 1961. The Harlem Democrats nominated him to compete for the New York State Assembly in the 72nd District. He won the election and was the appointed Congressman to govern the 177th and 178th New York State Legislative bodies until 1970.

• In the early '70s, when Charles Rangel was a newly elected Congress representative, New York City was dealing with a rising tide of crimes. Nonetheless, he was a part of a delegation that was instrumental in winning a closed-door conversation with President Richard Nixon in the White House.
• He was involved in an ethics controversy and lost his seat in 1967. However, the decision of US Supreme Court in 1969 let him regain his seat.
