Christopher Gardner was born in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, and did not have a good early life. He grew up along with his three stepsisters. He used to live with their mother and stepfather.
His stepfather Freddie Triplett, was a very abusive man and was the reason for her mother's conviction as he accused her of welfare fraud.
Christopher Gardner, along with his stepsisters, was sent to a foster home as things became violent between his parents. At this point, he was a confused youth with no father figure and burdened with a severe economic crisis.
When Chris Gardner was in school, he came in contact with his maternal uncles and was particularly fond of Henry, who was in the navy. He looked towards him as a father figure and enlisted in the Navy and was allotted the position of hospital corpsman.
