About Chris Hirata

Christopher Michael Hirata, more commonly known as Chris Hirata, has been an outstanding young professor of physics and astronomy at Ohio State University.

Chris Hirata graduated with a bachelor's degree in physics from Caltech in 2001 at 18. At 16 years of age, he did research on the colonization of Mars for NASA.

In 2005, Princeton University granted Chris Hirata his Ph.D. for his astrophysics thesis: Weak Gravitational Data Analysis and Lensing Theory. He worked at Caltech as an assistant professor from 2006-2012 before becoming a full professor and transferring to Ohio State University.

In 2013, Prof. Chris Hirata joined the Ohio State University's physics and astronomy departments.

He works in cosmology, with a varying fascination with inflation, the cosmic microwave background, large-scale structures in the universe, and dark energy. Hirata is a theorizer, but he has interests in statistics, data analysis, and collaboration with observational programs and his research has more of an emphasis on cosmic microwave background, dark energy, accelerating expansion of the universe, the general relativity, galaxy clusters, and the large-scale structure of the universe (and the formation of these structures, the Reionization epoch), the gravitational influence of dark matter, cosmological perturbation theory, supersonic velocity currents, thermal velocities along with the recombination epoch.

He is a member of NASA's proposed WFIRST (Wide-Field Infrared Survey Telescope) space telescope.

What awards has Chris Hirata won?

Christopher Michael Hirata received the 2018 New Horizons in Physics Prize, also known as the Oscar of Science, for his fundamental contributions to our understanding of how the universe's first galaxies formed as well as for developing and using the most potent tools of precision cosmology. In 2021 he was awarded Distinguished Scholar Award by Ohio State. Besides these, he also received the Presidential Early Career Award in 2012, Simons Foundation Investigator in 2013, and Helen B. Warner Prize in 2014.

Chris Hirata's Hobbies And Interests
