Christopher Scott Petersen, who was most recently the head coach at the University of Washington, was an American football coach.

Chris Petersen was born on October 13, 1964. Petersen was Boise State University's head coach for eight seasons and led the Broncos to two BCS bowl victories in 2006, 2007, and 2010 Fiesta Bowls.

Chris Petersen is the first recipient of the Paul' Bear' Bryant Award twice, taking home the prize in 2006 and 2009. In 2010, Petersen also received the Bobby Dodd Coach of the Year Award. In 2016, Petersen took Washington to the College Football Playoff, but the Huskies lost to Alabama in the Peach Bowl.

On December two, 2019, Petersen made his resignation known; it will take effect following the team's bow teams. As the UC Davis freshmen coach in 1987, Chris Petersen started his coaching career. He is married to Barbara Petersen and blessed with two sons.

Petersen, from Yuba City, California, was a quarterback and safety for the Honkers at Yuba City High School. Following his 1983 graduation, he spent two seasons as quarterback for the Sacramento City College Panthers before transferring to Division II's non-sII'sarship UC Davis. He graduated from UC Davis in 1988 with a bachelor's and a master's.

As the UC Davis freshmen coach in 1987, Chris Petersen started his coaching career. He reported to Jim Sochor. Chris Petersen served as the receivers coach for UC Davis from 1989 to 1991. He spent one season coaching quarterbacks while at Pittsburgh. In 1993, he relocated to Portland State, playing quarterback from 1993 to 1994.

Later in 1995, he made his coaching debut with the Oregon Ducks soccer team, where he stayed until 2000. Between 2001 and 2005, he worked as the offensive coordinator at Boise State for most of his tenure. Chris Petersen was hired as Boise State's head coach later in 2006.

He signed a five-year, $18 million contract with the University of Washington on December 6, 2013. He agreed to a two-year agreement with Washington after 2015. Chris Petersen renewed his contract in 2017 for another seven years, through 2023; however, Chris Petersen later declared his intention to leave the organization in December 2019.

After the 2005 season, Hawkins transferred from Boise State to Colorado, and on December 16, Petersen was given the position of head coach. Speaking of the change, sophomore tailback Ian Johnson remarked, 'We had faith in him and knew he would look after us. We were aware of his wonderful character. He intended to seek out like-minded individuals. We were waiting for him to bring everyone, and he brought the right ones.'  

Petersen was twice nominated for the Broyles Award, given to the finest assistant coach in the country, during his five seasons as offensive coordinator at Boise State. Petersen guided the Broncos to their first-ever appearance in a BCS bowl game and an undefeated regular season in 2006, his first year as head coach. Boise State was the only unbeaten team in Division I FBS for the 2006 season, and he became the fourth rookie head coach to guide a club to a BCS bowl game.

The Idaho State Board of Education authorized a new contract for Petersen on February 22, 2007, paying him $4.25 million for five years, or $850,000 year, following the undefeated season of 2006. The Football Coaches Club, the Bronco Athletic Association booster club, media appearance fees, and state grants totaling $150,000 annually financed most of his income.

The 2016 Huskies experienced one of the greatest seasons in Washington history, capturing the Pac-12 title and earning a spot in the College Football Playoff for the first time in the program's history. On December 2, 2019, Petersen made his resignation known to take effect following the team's bowl game. He spent one season as a quarterbacks coach while at Pittsburgh.
