Childhood And Education

Claudia Cardinale was born with the name Claude Joséphine Rose Cardinale on April 15, 1938, in the neighborhood of La Goulette in Tunis, French Tunisia. Her parents were Yolande Greco, the daughter of the owners of a shipbuilding firm, and Francesco Cardinale, a railway worker. Both her parents had Sicilian roots, and she grew up speaking French, Tunisian Arabic, and Sicilian. She also has a younger sister named Blanche Cardinale.

Claudia attended Saint-Joseph-de-l'Apparition school of Carthage alongside Blanche, then went on to attend Paul Cambon School, where she studied with the dream of becoming a teacher. She was quite fascinated with the French actress Brigitte Bardot as a teenager, as were the girls around her.

She began acting during her time in school, acting in the short film 'Anneaux d'or' by French director René Vautier alongside her classmates. The film was screened at the Berlin Film Awards, and the success of the short film made her a local celebrity of sorts. The local interest, along with her stunning looks, led her to be spotted by French director Jacques Baratier, who offered her a small role in his film 'Goha'.

Though she was reluctant to accept the role because of the implications that the director chose her only because she was Tunisian and not because of her acting abilities, she appeared in the film, making her feature film debut. However, her career took afterward, during the 1957 Italian Cinema Week, when she won the title of Most Beautiful Italian Girl in Tunisia, the prize for which was a trip to the Venice Film Festival.

She was noticed by many film producers during the festival, who invited her to Rome to study at the Experimental Cinematography Center. She obliged; however, she returned home shortly after because she could not keep up with the acting assignments.
