About Coco Chanel

Coco Chanel, real name Gabrielle Bonheur Chanel, was a very famous and renowned French fashion designer.

It was Coco who revolutionized women's apparel with her designs of minimalism and added some style. She has been the only fashion designer whose name had made it to Time Magazine's list for the category of the 100 most influential people of the 20th century.

In particular, Coco Chanel had an indelible effect on women's fashion during the year 1920. Women's clothes had been fairly confining until after the First World War, with full-length skirts being unsuited for many tasks. Coco Chanel contributed to the development of more simple and practical women's attire.

The fashion designer also developed women's pants as well as suits, something that had never been done previously. Gabrielle Chanel was born in 1883- according to most reports, it was a tightly guarded truth - Coco was adamant about not disclosing her details. She grew up in a poor and unstable environment in France. Gabrielle's beloved mother passed away when she was twelve years old, and her dad moved his three daughters, including Gabrielle, to a convent located in Correze, France.

Even though her life in such a strictly religious institution was tight and frugal, she started learning how to sew, and soon she gained a basic understanding of how to make garments. She left that convent at the age of eighteen & relocated to Moulins, France. She worked as a tailor and pursued a second job performing at cabaret events, but her voice was not excellent enough to allow her to continue a stage career.

Instead, the fashion designer developed an inventive use of jersey fabric, a produced fabric that came in handy throughout the First World War's limitations. She immediately gained recognition for being on the cutting edge of style. Her first success inspired her to open a second boutique in Biarritz, which thrived as a hangout for the elite throughout WWI. By 1919, Chanel was able to build her first Paris boutique on 31 Rue Cambon, in the center of the city's most fashionable district, and was ready to take on the fashion industry and become the fashion icon as we know her today. The designer got registered as a couturière the same year.

Coco was born in an impoverished family in Saumur, France, on August 19, 1883, the second of Albert Chanel, as well as Jeanne Deville's five kids. Chanel's parents didn't get married until she was a year old. Her dad, a migratory market trader, would travel from city to city to sell his things, often with his family and sometimes alone. Her mom's health deteriorated in 1894 after a complicated pregnancy that led to the child's death.

Chanel's mom died in February 1895. Chanel and her two siblings were sent to a convent-run boarding school in Moulins, Notre Dame Finishing School.

The ace French designer had slept in unheated dormitories and sat at a table with other underprivileged students who seemed to have no parents to pay for school during her six years there. She would never recognize or admit the depths of her childhood poverty. Chanel refused even to acknowledge her humble roots as a grownup, preferring to talk rather than being nurtured by her aunts. But her stories were usually hazy or inconsistent, and the plot or characters would shift as the situation demanded.
