Cortez Kennedy got his validation from Wilson, Arkansas by helping his Rivercrest team to the 3-A State Championship in 1985.

Cortez Kennedy had been shifted to the University of Miami from North Mississippi Junior College in 1988. There, he was recognized as the best defensive lineman by coaches in the last 10 years of the league.

In 1989, Cortez became the most dominant senior defensive tackle under the nation's top defensive line unit. In the Sugar Bowl UM led to an 11-1 season, winning against Alabama with the help of Cortez's tenacious defense. UM also became the National Champion in College Football in the same year. Being in the second-team AP All-American honors, Seattle Seahawks drafted him in the 1990 draft as the 3rd player taken in the 1st round. In 1991, he was quite progressive as the Pro Bowl and the Seahawks put him as a nose tackle or defensive tackle. Cortez declared himself retired after 11 seasons in the NFL in 2000. In the 1992 NFL season although he was playing on a 2-14 team, he became the defensive Player Of The Year. He went for the eight Pro Bowls, selected All-Pro three times, and Seahawks' Ring of Honor.

Although the Seahawks have a record of 2–14, Associated Press decided to nominate Kennedy as the NFL Defensive Football Player Of The Year. A tribute to Jerome Brown, a close friend, he got a jersey with the number 99. He played his last matches in the 2000 season. He was refrained in the 2001 season and in August 2002 he decided to retire. Although he got several offers by other teams but he made his mind about sticking to the Seattle Seahawks team in those last days of his career.
