At the time, Grand Funk was managed by Terry Knight, who Mark and Don knew from the band Terry Knight and The Pack. However, disagreements between the band members and Knight caused them to separate.

Eventually, Craig Frost would join Grand Funk. The pianist was added to the keyboards full time. What the addition of the Pianist brought to Grand Funk saw them explore and expand the style of music the trio had, adding an entirely new dimension to it. Before the addition of Craig Frost, the songs that the band would create and produce were described to have a style of being garage-band-based rock and roll roots. As Craig Frost became a part of the team, a more rhythm and blues/pop rock-oriented style came to take hold.
