Daisy Fuentes was born to Amado Fuentes and Maria Fuentes on November 17, 1966, in Havana, Cuba. Her father worked as a real estate dealer from Cuba, and her mother is a painter from Spain. Rosana Fuentes Brijbag, her younger sister, was her companion as she grew up.

Due to political upheaval, Daisy's family had to flee their home nation under Fidel Castro's rule and relocate to Madrid, Spain, when she was three. The family relocated to Harrison.

From 6 p.m. until 11 p.m., she would offer an evening to late-night weather news. Soon afterward, she began working for WXTV-DT as a weather reporter and evening news anchor. In 1988, she became well-known in Latin America and the United States for anchoring MTV Internacional, a one-hour Spanish music show on Telemundo Network. She worked for WXTV-DT before joining MTV in 1993 as a host for the network MTV Latin America and becoming the first Latina VJ (Video Jockey) in the United States.
