David Lesley Schultz was born on June 6, 1959, in Palo Alto, United States. He was half Ukrainian Jewish and half British.

Dave Schultz coached many individuals and teams at the college level and privately. While coaching the wrestling squad and getting ready for another Olympic bid, he trained at the Foxcatcher center. He was shot and killed by the then millionaire John Eleuthera du Pont on January 26, 1996.

Dave Schultz's murder was dramatized in the 2014 film 'Foxcatcher' starring Mark Ruffalo, who was nominated for an Academy Award for his excellent performance.

Dave Schultz was born in Palo Alto, California, on June 6, 1959. He later went to the Palo Alto High School. His Parents were Dorothy Jeans St. Germain and Phillip Gary Schultz. He was the brother of Mark Schultz and had two half-siblings- Micheal and Seana.

As a young boy, Dave Schultz was given the moniker Pudge due to his weight. He experienced bullying from other students. He also had dyslexia, which many teachers misunderstood as a mental illness.

Dave Schultz started wrestling in middle school at Palo Alto David Starr Jordan Middle School under the guidance of Robert Hoskins. Schultz won the state title as a senior at Palo Alto high school. He also won his first wrestling championships at the national and international levels the same year.

Schultz defeated Chuck Yagla, a two-time NCAA champion, and NCAA Outstanding Wrestler. His brother Mark Schultz started competing in gymnastics, winning the Northern California All-Around Gymnastics Championships in his age group. Mark switched to wrestling in his junior year, winning state in his second year.

He won seven total medals, including World and Olympic titles. Dave Schultz and his brother Mark Schultz were the first American brothers to win gold medals in the same Olympics along with the Banach brothers. They were also the only Americans to win World and Olympic titles.

Dave Schultz previously worked as an assistant coach at Stanford University, the Oklahoma state university, and the University of Wisconsin-Madison. Kurt Angle, the 1996 Olympic Gold Medalist in wrestling who subsequently became a professional wrestler, was among the many top American athletes Schultz taught.

Dave Schultz served as a coach for the Team Foxcatcher of John Eleuthera du Pont in the '90s, which trained in a facility constructed on the du Pont family property in Newtown Square, Pennsylvania. There, in 1996, a mentally ill John du Pont killed Schultz.
