Dave Vanian was born on October 12, 1956, and will be turning 66 years old in 2022.
Dave Vanian was born David Lett on October 12, 1956, in Newcastle upon Tyne in Tyne and Wear, North East England. His family moved to Hemel Hempstead when David was only two months old. Growing up in Hertfordshire, Lett was inspired by the goth and punk scene- even undergoing a brief stint as a grave digger. His stage name- Dave Vanian- is a play on 'Transylvanian.'
He is also regarded as one of the earliest trendsetters of dark, gothic fashion, inspired by the supernatural, otherworld, and other paranormal forces. Vanian shared that he enjoys film noir, renaissance artwork, and horror films and elements, all of which he incorporates in his daily clothing and fashion sense.
Rock singer Dave Vanian married his first wife, Laurie, in 1977; however, they divorced sometime in the '90s. He married his current wife, Patricia Morrison, in a Las Vegas ceremony in 1996, right after the band had wrapped up an Australian tour. The couple has a daughter, Emily, and they live in Harrow in Greater London as of July 2022.
Dave Vanian is best known for being the lead vocalist of the English rock band 'The Damned.'
Vanian is one of the founding members of The Damned alongside guitarist Brian James, bassist, and guitarist Raymond Ian Burns, aka Captain Sensible, and drummer Christopher John Millar aka Rat Scabies. Three of the band's founding members, including Vanian, were initially in the band 'Masters Of The Backside,' after which they left and formed 'The Damned' in 1976.
They played their first show on July 6, 1976, as the supporting artists for a well-known punk rock band at that time, after which they began to gain popularity. They signed with Stiff Records, who released the band's first single, 'New Rose' on October 22, making them the first ever punk band from the UK to release a single.
The band released their first album 'Damned Damned Damned,' on February 18, 1977, closely followed by 'Music For Pleasure' on November 18 of the same year. However, the album did not impress critics and got primarily negative reviews, which caused the band to briefly part ways until they reunited sans James to release 'Machine Gun Etiquette' in 1979. As of 2022, The Damned has released 11 studio albums and starred in the 2015 documentary 'The Damned: Don't You Wish That We Were Dead.'
The band has been in action for over 40 years and celebrated its 40th anniversary at the Royal Albert Hall in May 2016. The band continues to make music and perform with its current members Dave Vanian, Captain Sensible, Paul Gray, Monty Oxymoron, and Will Taylor. 'The Damned' announced on October 21, 2020, that they were set to embark on a reunion tour in 2022, consisting of all four original founding members.
