David attended the Collegiate School and Dartmouth College, where Benioff was a member of the Sphinx Senior Society and Delta Alpha Fraternity. Soon after receiving his bachelor's degree from Dartmouth College in 1992, Benioff worked as a bouncer at a San Francisco club. David later worked as a wrestling coach as well as a high school English teacher at Poly Prep, Brooklyn.
Benioff studied Irish literature for one year at Trinity College, Dublin in 1995. During his time at Trinity College, Dublin, David met D.B. Weiss, his fellow collaborator. After writing a thesis on Samuel Beckett, Benioff quit academia at Trinity College. David went to Moose, Wyoming, for a writer's retreat in the countryside and worked as a radio DJ (disc jockey).
After flipping through 'The Mysteries Of Pittsburgh' by the writer, Michael Chabon, David decided to go forward with Irvine's Creative Writing program. In 1999, Benioff graduated after completing the Creative Writing program at the University of California with a Master of Fine Arts degree.

The duo later collaborated as the showrunners, co-writers, and executive producers of the TV adaption of George R.R. Martin's novel series 'A Song Of Ice And Fire'. In 2008, Benioff authored and published his second novel, 'City Of Thieves' after getting hired by Universal Pictures and writing an unused screenplay of the biographical novel of Kurt Cobain, 'Heavier Than Heaven', by Charles R. Cross.
Benioff and Weiss took on the project of writing, directing, and producing the screenplay, 'Dirty White Boy', based on the fiction of the same title by Stephen Hunter, as well as the promised HBO series, 'Confederate'. However, both the projects were unsuccessful in their making and were eventually dropped.
The duo signed with Disney on February 6, 2018, as writers and producers of a series of 'Star Wars' movies. This was to happen soon after the end of the final season of 'Game Of Thrones'. Weiss go a long way back, from flipping coins to choose who gets the credits while co-directing 'Game Of Thrones', to working on Netflix commitments, including the series of 'The Three-Body Problem' trilogy in 2020 and directing the stand-up special, 'Leslie Jones: Time Machine'.
