David Benioff is known for his work as a writer, director, showrunner, and executive producer on the HBO TV adaption of the series of books 'A Song Of Ice And Fire' by George R. R. Martin, called 'Game Of Thrones'. Benioff is also well known for co-writing the 2009 release, 'X-Men Origins: Wolverine' as well as the 2002 release, '25th Hour', and the 2004 movie, 'Troy'.

David Benioff Friedman was born on September 25, 1970. His parents are Barbara Benioff and Stephen Friedman. His father, Stephen, was the head of Goldman Sachs. David has two siblings who are older than him: Suzy and Caroline Friedman. Benioff was raised in Peter Cooper Village, Manhattan, and later on 86th Street. David spent most of his teenage years on 86th Street in Manhattan. When he turned 16, the family eventually shifted near the U.N. headquarters.
David attended the Collegiate School and Dartmouth College, where Benioff was a member of the Sphinx Senior Society and Delta Alpha Fraternity. Soon after receiving his bachelor's degree from Dartmouth College in 1992, Benioff worked as a bouncer at a San Francisco club. David later worked as a wrestling coach as well as a high school English teacher at Poly Prep, Brooklyn.
Benioff studied Irish literature for one year at Trinity College, Dublin in 1995. During his time at Trinity College, Dublin, David met D.B. Weiss, his fellow collaborator. After writing a thesis on Samuel Beckett, Benioff quit academia at Trinity College. David went to Moose, Wyoming, for a writer's retreat in the countryside and worked as a radio DJ (disc jockey).

David Benioff wrote his first novel as a thesis while completing his master's degree. After reading a preliminary trade copy, Tobey Maguire urged David to date it into a screenplay. The film adaption of his novel, '25th Hour', was directed by Spike Lee and Edward Norton played the lead role. Benioff later authored and published his short story collection, 'When The Nines Roll Over (And Other Stories)' in 2004.
Later on, Benioff wrote a screenplay for the epic, 'Troy' for which he was paid about $2.5 million by Warner Bros. In collaboration with the director, Marc Forster, David wrote the script and screenplay for the 2005 release, 'Stay' and the 2007 movie, 'The Kite Runner', respectively.
In 2009, Benioff also wrote the screenplay for the 'X-Men' spin-off 'X-Men Origins: Wolverine', which was later revised by Skip Woods due to the script's brutal and darker tone.

The duo later collaborated as the showrunners, co-writers, and executive producers of the TV adaption of George R.R. Martin's novel series 'A Song Of Ice And Fire'. In 2008, Benioff authored and published his second novel, 'City Of Thieves' after getting hired by Universal Pictures and writing an unused screenplay of the biographical novel of Kurt Cobain, 'Heavier Than Heaven', by Charles R. Cross.
Benioff and Weiss took on the project of writing, directing, and producing the screenplay, 'Dirty White Boy', based on the fiction of the same title by Stephen Hunter, as well as the promised HBO series, 'Confederate'.
