David West went to Garner Magnet High School in Garner, NC, and Hargrave Military Academy in Chatham, VA. As a senior at Hargrave in 1998–99, he secured first-team all-state honors.
David West was selected by the Atlantic 10 All-Rookie Team in his rookie year at Xavier University after leading the A-10 in rebounds (9.1) and placing fourth on the Musketeers in scoring (11.7).
During his junior season, David West was voted A-10 Player Of The Year and Defensive Player Of The Year, as well as A-10 Tournament MVP. He averaged 9.8 rebounds (26th in the country) and 2.5 blocks (22nd in the country) per game. He also had the first triple-double in school history against Long Island University.
West received two of the five major college Basketball Player of the Year titles during his senior season. He was awarded AP National Player Of The Year and National Player Of The Year by the United States Basketball Writers Association. In 2002–03, he became the Atlantic 10's first three-time Player Of The Year and was voted first-team All-America by the Associated Press. He developed as a key bench player for the Golden State Warriors, thanks in large part to his exceptional passing talents. West missed 14 games in January and February 2017 due to a non-displaced fracture in his left thumb. He had a season-high 15 points and a game-high plus-23 in a big comeback win over the San Antonio Spurs for the Golden State Warriors on March 29, 2017.
With a new 67–15 record, the Golden State Warriors concluded the season as the top seed in the West. Following a 129–115 victory against the Spurs in a game of the Western Conference Finals, the Warriors were unbeaten in the first three postseason series, reaching their third consecutive NBA Finals series. West appeared in all four postseason games as the Warriors beat the Cleveland Cavaliers in the 2017 NBA Finals, 4–1. The Warriors' playoff record of 16–1 was the best in NBA history in terms of postseason winning percentage.
David West re-signed with the Golden State Warriors for one more year on July 25, 2017, after winning his first championship ring, with plans to retire following the 2017–2018 season.
