The alternative-rock-lead vocalist, Brent Smith had a high school band called 'Blind Thought' before fronting the rock group Shinedown. Later, he became the lead singer in a band called 'Dreve' that Atlantic Records had signed. Brent was compelled by Atlantic Records to either find a new band or risk losing his record agreement.

After that, he traveled to Los Angeles, California, where he recorded with renowned producer Desmond Child. Shortly after they arrived in Knoxville, Tennessee, at home, Atlantic cut the band but kept Smith. Shortly after, he cobbled the 'Shinedown band' together. Atlantic Records soon offered him a developing contract. In 2001, Smith relocated to Jacksonville, Florida, and started working on the project.
