He played college football for the Texas Longhorns from 1974 to 1977, and then he was signed by Houston Oilers. He was a member of this team from 1978 to 1984. Earl had to choose between Oklahoma and Texas, and he went to the University of Texas Austin and played college football for the team Texas Longhorns from the year 1974 to 1977. He played all 11 games during his first year and was awarded first-team All-America in 1975. Earl played only seven games during his junior year but achieved a record finish. He gave his best at the Southwest Conference Championship, and the texas team was victorious. Later, they faced Notre Dame at the Cotton Bowl Classic, but even after Earl's incredible performance, Notre Dame was victorious.
After a stunning college football performance, Earl Campbell was selected by Houston Oilers in the 1978 National Football League Draft. He was a member of the team for several years that is from the year 1978 to 1984. He portrayed his intense talent during his time on the Houston Oilers team. He was praised and awarded for his immense contribution. Because of him, the Oilers team had a five-time winning streak, and 1980 is considered to be his best National Football League season year. But later, when his head coach was changed, he also saw a lot of downsides.
In the year 1984, Earl Campbell was exchanged to the New Orleans Saints team with Richard Johnson. Campbell then became a member of the New Orleans Saints team.
