Ed Asner was an American male actor and former Screen Actors Guild president.
Edward Asner is best known for playing Lou Grant on 'The Mary Tyler Moore Show'. Ed Asner was also in its spin-off drama series 'Lou Grant' in the ’70s and early ’80s.
This made Ed Asner one of the few television performers to play the same role in both a comedy and a drama. In the 1966 Western 'El Dorado', Ed Asner played John Wayne's antagonist Bart Jason. Ed Asner portrayed Santa Claus in a number of films, including 2003's 'Elf'. In 2007, he played the antagonist Krad, in the movie 'Christmas Is Here Again'.

Eddie Asner was born in Kansas City. He is the son of Ashkenazi Jewish immigrants, Lizzie, a homemaker, and Morris David Asner, who managed a second-hand shop and junkyard. His four elder siblings were Ben J. Asner, Eve Asner, Esther Edelman, and Labe Asner, and he was the youngest of five children. Ed Asner was born and raised in an Orthodox Jewish family and was given the Hebrew name Yitzhak.
Ed Asner graduated from Wyandotte High School in Kansas City, Kansas, and went on to attend the University of Chicago. There, he studied journalism until a lecturer told him there was little money to be earned in the field.
