She was a trained dancer and singer and worked with several touring companies, performing. She also worked as a waitress in comedy clubs.

Andy Kaufman met her during her time as a waitress and encouraged her to begin her career as a full-time stand-up comedian. She started her career performing stand-up at a comedy club called the Improv.
