Eric had a very struggling childhood, as he was born with a club foot and needed crutches to walk. After his dreadful situation with his father, Eric ran away from his home when he was eight years old. He first went to Los Angeles and then to Chicago, where he, unfortunately, got involved in criminal jobs. Then after three years, he returned to his mother who had just gotten divorced. A few years later, he got into school to complete his education, but at the time of World War II, he dropped his studies and joined the Merchant Marine and then the US Navy. In completing the challenge of lifting a weight of 200 pounds, he got his face hurt and underwent plastic surgery to fix his face. That gave him a turning point in his life as he started to take acting lessons.

After being dropped out of school, at the time of World War II, he joined the Merchant Marine and US Navy. He met with an accident where he damaged his face, for which he went through cosmetic surgery. Eric started taking acting classes post-surgery. He rejoined his job at the Paramount Studios and used to take acting classes in the evening. Eric Fleming made his debut audition as a challenge to one of the other actors but lost the challenge, which cost him a bet of $100. He made his acting debut in a road company production of the play 'Happy Birthday' in 1946.

A few years later, Eric Fleming appeared in many plays in Chicago and New York, which included 'My Three Angles', 'Stalag 17' and 'No Time For Sergeants'. His television shows career started in the ‘50s when he performed live at many famous stages like The Web and Kraft Television theater. Eric also appeared in numerous Broadway plays, which include the musical ‘Plain And Fancy’. In 1958, Eric Fleming left the Broadway shows and moved to Hollywood, where he starred in various low-end movies such as ‘Curse Of The Undead’, ‘Fright’, and the Sci-fi/Cult film ‘Queen Of Outer Space’.

In 1958, he finally got the lead role in the CBS western series 'Rawhide' as Gil's favor. Eric was cast for almost seven to eight seasons of 'Rawhide', In the tragic year of 1966, he appeared in the TV series 'Bonanza' for the episode of 'The Pursued' and 'Peace'. He was shooting for the two-part adventure program 'High Jungle'. There, he met his fate as he accidentally got drowned in the Huallaga River. He also appeared in the 'Glass Bottom Boat' as Suave Spy, for which he got very famous.
