Ethan made his wrestling debut in 2002. In 2007, he began wrestling for the Ohio Valley Wrestling (OVW) company.
Ethan Carter III won his debut bout against Rockstar Spud, when they participated in a Six Sides of Steel match. Carter's second bout was a Last Man Standing contest. It was against Tyrus on the May 17 edition of Impact Wrestling.
Ethan bagged a deal with WWE in 2009 and performed under the name Derrick Bateman. He was sent to WWE's developmental territory, Florida Championship Wrestling (FCW). After a hiatus from WWE programming, Bateman was reintroduced as a rookie halfway through the fifth season of 'NXT'. He debuted in the June 2011 episode of 'NXT Redemption'. Meanwhile, Bateman's role became more malevolent. This prompted Bryan to depart, after claiming that Bateman was making a mockery of himself. Bateman began a long rivalry with Titus O'Neil in July. Maxine returned to 'NXT' in August as Bateman's girlfriend. However, she began a rivalry with O'Neil's buddy AJ and in the September 6 edition of 'NXT Redemption', Bateman and Maxine were defeated by O'Neil and AJ. Bateman proposed to Maxine in the October 26 edition of 'NXT Redemption'. Bateman and Maxine were dubbed Beta-Max in the November 2 edition of 'NXT Redemption'. They competed in a six-person tag match alongside JTG. However, they lost to O'Neil, AJ, and Percy Watson.
Hutter lost to Jay Bradley in a dark match in August 2013. This was before the impact of wrestling television tapings in Cleveland, Ohio. TNA broadcast a segment on new talent, Ethan, on September 26. Another vignette ran the following week when it was revealed that Hutter had signed with Total Nonstop Action Wrestling (TNA). He would be debuting as Dixie Carter's spoilt nephew. Another vignette ran the next week, showing Hutter's new ring name as Ethan Carter III (EC3).
Ethan Carter III was announced to compete under his true name at Absolute Intense Wrestling's Absolution VIII in Cleveland, Ohio, shortly after his release. On June 30, he made his promotional debut by defeating Tim Donst. In May 2013, he also worked for Florida Underground Wrestling.
Carter interfered in a bout between Drew Galloway and Mike Bennett. This was an attempt to make up for his missteps that lost Galloway matches.
On the July 8 broadcast of 'Impact Wrestling', he successfully defended his TNA World Heavyweight Championship three times in one night, defeating Norv Fernum, Shark Boy, and Kurt Angle. EC3 retained his championship against Drew Galloway on the July 15 edition of 'Impact Wrestling'. EC3 beat Matt Hardy in a Full Metal Mayhem match at No Surrender.
