At that time, no one had an idea that Felipe López would become a high school basketball legend who would be compared to the great Spanish Michael Jordan. Felipe López joined the Rice High School in Manhattan, New York City, and it was there that he began shaping his basketball career.

Further, Felipe López also signed a free agent contract with Dallas Mavericks and Minnesota Timberwolves. He'd have played many regular games with them, but on October 19, 2002, while playing in a basketball game for Minnesota Timberwolves, Felipe López collided with Paul Pierce. Consequently, he suffered a knee injury that tore the anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) and the medial collateral ligament (MCL) in his left knee.
