He was the College of South Carolina's lead trainer. Martin recently completed a five-year term as the lead trainer at Kansas State University.

He was a university partner mentor and the head ball mentor at three Miami secondary schools before that. Martin has led his teams to five NCAA Tournament appearances and one Final Four appearance as a head coach. He was voted Men's Basketball Coach of the Year in the Big 12 Conference in 2010.

Frank Martin, who grew up in Miami, Florida, is the first American-born member of his family and the son of Cuban parents. He graduated from Florida International University with a bachelor's degree in physical education in 1993. In 1985, he began his basketball coaching career as the head coach of the boys' junior varsity team at Miami High School. After completing his studies at FIU in 1993, he was appointed to his first varsity coaching job at North Miami High School, where he stayed for eight years. Two years later, he returned to Miami Senior to coach the varsity team. From 1996 to 1998, the Stingarees won three straight state titles under his leadership, with teams that included future NBA players Steve Blake and Udonis Haslem. Due to recruiting breaches involving school staff and boosters who provided housing help to the players, the last of those titles were later invalidated. Martin was fired in 1999, even though he had never been accused of any crime. He then spent a year as the head coach at Booker T. Washington High School.
