His grandparents from his father's side had immigrated to the United States of America from Italy. They were originally called Coppola. Fred Couples won his first PGA Tour in 1983 at the Kemper Open at the Congressional Country Club located in the suburbs of Washington, D.C. He played in the final course along with Chen Tze-Chung as well as Scott Simpson. The three of them finished the course one hour after the previous group had played on the same course.

Along with Barry Jaeckel and Gil Morgan, the other three players, Couples, Simpson, and Chen, had finished in a tie for the first position. This was even after three rounds of 77, 76, and 77. The first three had finished their round several hours earlier. On the second hole on the course, Fred Couples was able to score a birdie and was able to take home the awaited title. Jaeckel was eliminated after hitting a wild tee shot. Finally, in 1992, Fred Couples became the first-ever American player to reach the Topmost position in the Official World ranking for golf. Fred Couples, a Champion PGA golfer, has given $25,000 in charitable contributions to a foundation named Mesothelioma Applied Research Foundation. The organization has also confirmed this.
