She was born in Mumbai, Maharashtra. At an early age, Pinto made the decision to become an actor. She participated in amateur plays while attending St. Xavier's College in Mumbai. After graduating, Pinto worked as a model for a short period of time before moving on to become a television host.

After a six-month-long process of rigorous auditions, Freida Pinto was selected to play Latika, the love interest of Dev Patel's Jamal, the main character. She went to Mumbai's Barry John Acting Studio for an acting class during the post-production stage. 'Slumdog Millionaire', which had a $15 million budget but produced $377.9 million in total revenue, was praised in particular for its story and soundtrack. She did not receive any popular Bollywood film roles.
