She was born in Mumbai, Maharashtra. At an early age, Pinto made the decision to become an actor. She participated in amateur plays while attending St. Xavier's College in Mumbai. After graduating, Pinto worked as a model for a short period of time before moving on to become a television host.
Freida Pinto was raised in the Malad neighborhood of North Mumbai, a middle-class neighborhood. When she was five years old, she decided she wanted to be an actress. Freida Pinto has always been interested in acting, but until she watched 'Monster' (2003) in college, she wasn't sure what path to take. Pinto started her modeling career in 2005 and signed on with Elite Model Management India, where she spent the next 2.5 years. She appeared in many television and print commercials for products from companies like Wrigley's Chewing Gum, eBay, Skoda, Airtel, Vodafone India, Visa, and De Beers.
At about the same time, Pinto started attending film and television auditions. Between 2006 and 2008, she served as the host of the global travel program, 'Full Circle' on Zee International Asia Pacific. Following a request from the casting director of the movie 'Slumdog Millionaire', Pinto's modeling agency chose her and six other models to attend an audition for the female role in Danny Boyle's 'Slumdog Millionaire' in 2007. After a six-month-long process of rigorous auditions, Freida Pinto was selected to play Latika, the love interest of Dev Patel's Jamal, the main character. She went to Mumbai's Barry John Acting Studio for an acting class during the post-production stage. 'Slumdog Millionaire', which had a $15 million budget but produced $377.9 million in total revenue, was praised in particular for its story and soundtrack. She did not receive any popular Bollywood film roles.
With her film debut in the 2008 play 'Slumdog Millionaire', a small version of Indian novelist Vikas Swarup's book 'Q & A' from 2005, Pinto shot to fame. She won many awards in relation to this film.
Freida Pinto won the Best Breakthrough Performance at the Palm Springs International Film Festival and the Screen Actors Guild Award, which Pinto won for Outstanding Performance By A Cast In A Motion Picture for the movie 'Slumdog Millionaire'. She was also nominated for many other awards, like Best Breakthrough Performance at the MTV Movie Awards and Choice Movie Actress-Drama at the Teen Choice Awards for the movie 'Slumdog Millionaire'.
She was also nominated for the BAFTA Award for Best Supporting Actress. 'Rise Of The Planet Of The Apes', a science fiction movie, was her biggest commercial hit (2011). She received considerable acclaim for her portrayal of the title heroine in Michael Winterbottom's 2011 film, 'Trishna'.
The film, 'Slumdog Millionaire' was the most popular at the 81st Academy Awards; it had 10 nominations, out of which it won eight of them, including the Award for Best Movie.
