Gary Young started his career as a musician, singer, and drummer at the age of 35.
The band Pavement was formed in Stockton, CA in 1989, by vocalist and guitarist Stephan Malkmus and his childhood friend Scott Kannberg. Their first EP, 'Slay Tracks', was recorded at Gary Young's local recording studio. During the recording of 'Louder Than You Think', Gary appeared on the EP for the first time. Gary Young was also part of the band's following two projects released in 1990 and 1991, namely 'Demolition Plot J-7' and 'Perfect Sound Forever'. Gary was also part of their debut album, which was released in 1992, called 'Slanted And Enchanted'. Even after leaving Pavement, his pursuit of creating music continued.
Gary's studio was previously his garage, and because his neighbors gave their family a hard time, they bought a house about seven mi outside the town in the corner of a walnut orchid. There were two houses on an acre; however, before they agreed to buy the house, it was bombed and destroyed. Gary Young would own the home at the agreed price with great difficulty. Gary's brother helped him set up the design of the studio.
In an interview, Gary Young claimed that he did all the recordings, writing, and playing himself for his releases as he could not get anyone to help him. Since Gary had learned to strum a guitar, he could also play chords on a piano and had mastered the strokes with drums; he was able to manage on his own.
