He was born in Pleasantville, New York, and studied acting at Ithaca College, earning a bachelor's degree in fine arts in 1952.

He changed his name around this time, taking 'Gavin' from a physically challenged victim in a television play and 'MacLeod' from Beatrice MacLeod, his Ithaca theater coach.
