About George Lazenby
George Robert Lazenby is an Australian actor born in Goulburn, New South Wales, Australia, on September 5, 1939.
Post his stint in the Australian Army, Lazenby shifted base to London in the mid-'60s. In London, he tried his hand as a used car salesman and an auto mechanic before becoming a model.
As his modeling career took off, he decided to become an actor. As luck would have it, he got his biggest break when he was cast as James Bond in 'On Her Majesty's Secret Service' in 1968. It was his first film, and he still remains the youngest actor to have played the role as of 2022.
Incidentally, it was in 1966 that Lazenby came across Bond series producer Albert R. Broccoli at a hair salon in London. The producer liked his charm and recommended him for the role. Lazenby earned the role owing to his impressive interviews, screen-test, and fighting skills, although he had no serious acting experience. Until then, he had only had a small role in an Italian-made Bond spinoff and few advertisements. In order to look right for the role, Lazenby spent all his savings on getting a suit made by the tailor who used to make suits for Sean Connery. In addition, he also bought a Rolex watch, something which was often worn by Sean Connery on screen.
However, even before the movie premiered in 1969, Lazenby informed the producers that it would be his last appearance as James Bond. He stated that the contract he was offered to play future Bond roles was very strenuous and that he wanted to explore different roles in the future.
During his modeling days, Lazenby was once voted the Top Model Of The Year in the UK, and he was quite famous for a commercial he did with Fry's chocolate bars. The only actor in the James Bond franchise to have played the character for just one movie, Lazenby bagged many roles in television movies and TV series after quitting the Bond franchise.
He acted in numerous commercials, James Bond film spoofs, and Hong Kong-based action films in his career. He also appeared in several TV programs as a guest. Working in Hollywood, Lazenby further lent his voice to many animated series and movies and was seen in a recurring role in the film series 'Emmanuelle'.
The former model Lazenby got married in 1973 and had two children, Zachary and Melanie.

Career And Professional Highlights
Best Known For…
Post his appearance in a James Bond movie, Lazenby had a lot of work, but none of it was as valued as it would have been had he continued with the Bond franchise. In his later years, Lazenby candidly accepted that his decision not to continue in the role was a rash one and wasn't well thought out.
Moreover, his short stint in the Bond role made his name a pop culture reference to describe forgettable ventures. Interestingly, according to a few anecdotes, it was Lazenby's agent Ronan O'Rahilly who talked him out of a seven-movie contract offered to him that would have allowed him to continue working with the James Bond film franchise. He had told Lazenby that the character of a secret agent would be too generic for his career in the '70s, which led him to walk out of the deal. However, it was later revealed that Lazenby pursued an acting course at Durham University's College of the Venerable Bede after the Bond fiasco.
Almost a year after 'On Her Majesty's Secret Service' was released, Lazenby starred in a movie called 'Universal Soldier'. The 1971 action movie was co-written by him, and Lazenby stated at the time that though the movie had action scenes, it was essentially an anti-guns movie that followed a non-linear plot, but, nevertheless, was entertaining to the hilt.
In 1972, Lazenby acted in an Italian mystery thriller film called 'Who Saw Her Die?'. For his role in the movie, he lost 35 lb owing to which he received several positive reviews for his performance. He starred opposite actress Anita Strindberg in the thriller. Post his success, he went on a world trip with his wife Chrissie for over a year.
Lazenby was next seen in the BBC series' Play For Today' in 1973. He starred in the episode 'The Operation'. The same year Lazenby traveled to Hong Kong to act in South East Asian action films and starred in three movies, namely 'The Man From Hong Kong' (released as 'The Dragon Flies'), 'A Queen's Ransom', and 'Stoner' (released as 'The Shrine of Ultimate Bliss').
