He began his acting career in the '60s and, within a few years, became renowned for performing in various dramatic and comedic roles. He is regarded as one of the American actors who rose to fame in the movie industry with an unchanged Jewish surname, thereby paving the way for other Jewish actors.
He appeared in movies such as 'Ship Of Fools' and 'King Rat' and co-starred in the drama 'Who's Afraid Of Virginia Woolf' between 1965-1966. In the '70s, he featured in notable roles in many films, including 'Where's Poppa,' 'Blume In Love,' 'The Hot Rock,' 'The Owl And The Pussy Cat,' 'Fun With Dick And Jane', and 'The Duchess And The Dirtwater Fox.' Segal also played supporting roles in movies such as 'For The Boys,' 'Flirting With Disaster,' and 'The Mirror Has Two Faces.'
He was famous for his regular appearance in two major television series, 'Just Shoot Me,' shot between 1997-2003, and 'The Goldbergs,' shot between 2013-2021. He played the role of Jack Gallo and Albert Pops Solomon, respectively, in both series. He featured as an egocentric painter in the drama 'Ship Of Fools' and the Barbra Streisand-directed film 'The Mirror Has Two Faces.'
He was nominated for an Oscar and Golden Globe Award for his role in the movie 'Who's Afraid Of Virginia Woolf.' The film was also nominated for an Academy Award for Best Picture. Segal starred in the' 70s' dark comedy 'Where's Poppa' and the diamond heist comedy 'The Hot Rock.' He starred as Rabbi Mendel in the film 'Heights' and Robin Hood in 'The Zany Adventures Of Robin Hood.'
In 2018, Segal appeared in the television series 'The Simpsons' and was a recurring cast in the TV series 'The Goldbergs' which ran between 2013-2021 with 185 episodes. Unfortunately, his acting career was halted after dying in 2021 due to a bypass surgery complication.
George has won the Golden Globe Awards for Most Promising New Comer and Best Actor in a Motion Picture. In addition, he received a star on the Hollywood Walk Of Fame under the television category.
