Gerald Lever was born in Canton, Ohio on July 13, 1966, to Eddie Levert and Martha Levert, and he had a younger brother named Sean Levert. Eddie Levert his father was the lead singer for the band The O'Jay. Gerald spent most of his childhood in Shaker Heights, Ohio. He had always had a keen interest in music ever since his childhood when he would accompany his father on his band's tours. His love for music grew stronger while he was in high school. He went on to form a music group by the name of LeVert in 1983, which included his brother Sean Levert and his friend Marc Gordon.
He also worked on a book based on his relationship with his father, Eddie Levert, and about facing various family issues head-on and solving them. The book entitled 'I Got Your Back: A Father And Son Keep It Real About Love, Fatherhood, Family, And Friendship' was published in June 2007.
