Cook was born Glen Charles Cook on July 9, 1944, in New York City to a civil servant Charles Albert and his mother, Louella Mabel (Handy) Cook. As a small child, he lived in southern Indiana but later moved to Northern California and was raised there. He then attended high school. Later, when Cook was attached to the Force Recon Unit, he participated in practice combat. Glen Cook left active duty one month after his unit shipped out to Vietnam. He attended the University of Missouri from 1962-1965. After that, he worked his way through college and started writing in earnest during his days working with General Motors. He has always loved writing since his grade school time.
